Congrats Andrew Kinman, PhD, & Austin Dunn, MS

July was an eventful month for the Pompano lab, with two defenses and graduations!

First, Andrew Kinman successfully defended his dissertation and earned his PhD, then stayed a few more weeks to wrap up and pass on his projects to Pargat Singh. His excellent presentation was titled, “Modification and Application of Antibodies and Their Fragments for Immunostaining in Live Lymphatic Tissue Slices.”

Next, Austin Dunn defended his Master’s thesis and earned his MS degree! Look for his paper coming soon on his exciting project, “Spatially Resolved Measurement of Dynamic Glucose Uptake in Live Ex Vivo Tissues”.

Pompano lab in Switzerland

We had a great time presenting at MicroTAS 2019, in Basel, Switzerland, where Meg and Andrew each presented a poster on their research. Prof. Pompano served on the Technical Program Committee and also the Poster Judging committee, and so got to see a wide array of excellent work.

Pictures coming soon.

Meg presents at SciX

In October 2019, PhD student Megan Catterton represented the lab at SciX 2019 in the ANACHEM Award award session, a session in honor of Prof. Robert Kennedy receiving the ANACHEM award. Held in Palm Springs, CA, this special symposium included leaders in the field of microfluidics for bioanalysis. Meg made us proud!

Visit to Chinese University of Hong Kong

It was very special to be invited to speak at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the department of Chemistry, meeting up with former Ismagilov-lab colleague Prof. Bo Zheng for the day. Plus we got a beautiful view from the top of the mountain that this unique university is built upon.

Microfluidics GRC in Hong Kong

Prof. Pompano and Jennifer Ortiz made the trek to Hong Kong to present in the 2019 Gordon Research Conference for Physics and Chemistry of Microfluidics. It was a wonderful conference, filled with much exciting new data as well as new and old friends. Plus we had a great time exploring. Jenn’s poster, Rebecca’s poster on Meg and Sophie’s recent work, and Rebecca’s short talk went over well and we received lots of valuable feedback. Look for papers on these topics soon!

Public talk at UVA Forward

A Glimpse into the Chemistry of the Immune System”

It was a special honor to be invited to speak to UVA staff members at their annual professional development event in June 2018. Although the event was meant to inspire the attendees, in the end it was just as inspiring for me! Sharing our lab’s vision, goals, and progress with people from mostly non-science backgrounds, many of whom provide the daily support that make it possible, was a special privilege and a touching reminder of why I am here.

The Pompano Lab at AAI

Maura Belanger presented at the annual AAI conference held this year in Austin, Texas  She presented her work on delivery of beads to lymph node slices.  While there she saw some great talks and returned with a lot of new ideas for the lab.  We look forward to the new insights and to following some of the scientific advancements coming out of this conference!
